South Florida's Dry Season Brings Record-Breaking Rainfall

Although it is currently the dry season in South Florida, heavy rain events are still possible. The dry season lasts from October 15th to May 15th and typically only receives 30% of the yearly rainfall.

However, the past few days have seen significant rainfall, with some areas receiving up to 10 inches since Sunday evening. This is due to a trigger, in the form of a cold front that moved through South Florida and stalled across the Florida Straits. The proximity of the stalled front generated lift in the atmosphere, combined with strong high pressure to the north, creating a conveyer belt for showers and storms to push inland from the Atlantic waters.

This influx of Atlantic moisture has caused flooding and wind gusts of over 40 mph in many areas of South Florida. On April 12th, schools and airports were closed in Broward due to flash flood emergencies, and flooding continued in parts of South Florida.

It is predicted that we will see one more day of deep moisture, spotty flooding, and gusty winds before the stalled front and trigger move back to the north as a warm front on Wednesday. This will result in drying out and a quick warm-up, with afternoon temperatures bouncing from the upper 70s to the upper 80s or even close to 90.
